SILVER LINING

(n) a consoling aspect of a difficult situation

Meet the Artist

Welcome to Fatal Ink!  My name is Katie – a painter by day and a self proclaimed True Crime Addict by night!  I’ve been fascinated since childhood when it comes to true crime.  I remember asking my mom, at a very young age, what could ever make someone purposely do harm to another.  It was such a foreign concept.  I remember her response like it was yesterday, “Honey, they are just sick.”  So simple.  Not as in, “disgusting” sick, but as in “diseased” sick.  And that made perfect sense to my six year old self.  The perpetrators had an illness they couldn’t control.  And that idea captivated me.

So, I payed close attention any time someone told true crime stories.  Each time, trying to analyse what type of sickness that specific person had…trying to see things through their eyes.  As I’ve gotten older, the material is much easier to find – and I feel much less like I need to hide in a closet while I indulge in learning about these tragedies.

But, the more and more I read, and watch, and listen to, the more I feel like the perpetrators are the main subject.  Most times, the cover of the story doesn’t even feature the victim.  It’s usually a mugshot, or a photo of the courtroom honing in on the criminal as he sits and awaits his fate.  This never feels right.  If that were me who was duped into helping a stranger and ended up in a field somewhere, I wouldn’t want my family to see the asshole in the newspaper every day.  I would want them to see photos of me, smiling, enjoying life with my three children, remembering the things that I loved about life.

So, I’ve decided to combine the two things that I love – painting and true crime.  Not only will you find stories of true crime and injustice here, but, you will also find paintings dedicated to the honor of those whose lives have been cut short.  Paintings that will highlight the victim and never idolize the sick minded individuals who stole a loved one from their families.

A portion of the proceeds from each painting will go to End The Backlog.  An organization committed to raising funding and awareness for the hundreds of thousands of Sexual Assault Forensic Exams, or “rape kits”, that remain untested across the country.
